چکیده

Carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2-2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl-Nmethylcarbamate) is a very effective systemic and contact insecticide and nematicide used against a wide range of agricultural pests (Aquino and Pathak, 1976; Caro et al., 1973). Though less persistent than most organochlorine pesticides, carbofuran is more toxic to animals, it is very soluble in water and tends to degrade faster under flooded soil conditions (Caro et al., 1973; Venkateswarlu et al., 1977; El-Zorgani et al., 1980). The adsorption and desorption characteristics which determine the movement of pesticides through the soil profile, their bioavailabiltiy, microbial degradability and persistence depend upon the soil properties such as organic matter content, clay content and the physical/chemical properties of the pesticide i.e. size, shape, solubility in water, pK values and polarity (Wondimagegnehu and Foy, 1986; Calderbank, 1989). In Kenya, carbofuran is used extensively against rice pests in paddy fields and because of its acute toxicity the fate of its residues in terms of their persistence and mobility is of great concern (Anonymous, 1985; Plimmer, 1980). The aim of this study was to investigate the adsorption/desorption and mobility of carbofuran in samples of soil collected from the Ahero and Chiromo areas of Kenya.

Carbofuran Adsorption, Leaching and Accumulation in Edible Tissues in Three Selected Soils in Tropics

Carbofuran is moderately mobile in soil which could lead to ground water pollution and accumulation in plant tissues. A study was carried out to investigate the adsorption, leaching and accumulation of carbofuran in edible tissues in three soil series of Sri Lanka namely Chankanai, Inuvil and Navatkuli. For the adsorption study, soil samples were shaken with carbofuran having 625μg for 2 hours....

Soil and water contamination with carbofuran residues in agricultural farmlands in Kenya following the application of the technical formulation Furadan.

This study was undertaken to determine the concentrations of carbofuran residues in water, soil and plant samples from selected sites in the farmlands in Kenya and to demonstrate the impact of Furadan use on the local environment. Soil, water and plant samples obtained from agricultural farmlands where the technical formulation Furadan has been used extensively showed high environmental contami...

Reduction of chromium toxicity by applying various soil amendments in artificially contaminated soil

Six soil amendments including municipal solid waste compost (MSWC), coal fly ash (CFA), rice husk biochar prepared at 300°C (B300) and 600°C (B600), zerovalent iron (Fe0), and zerovalent manganese (Mn0) were evaluated to determine their ability to reduce mobility of chromium (Cr) in a Cr-spiked soil. The Cr-spiked soil samples were separately incubated with selected amendments at 2 and 5% [weig...

Development and Applications of Quantum Dot-based Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Composites for Optosensing of Carbofuran in Water.

In this paper, quantum dot (QD)-based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was fabricated and successfully utilized as a fluorescent probe for highly selective and sensitive detection of carbofuran in water samples. The MIPs were synthesized followed by a multi-step swelling and polymerization method, and then labeled with CdSe/ZnS QDs via gradual solvent evaporation. Then the prepared QDs-MIP m...

Metalaxyl mobility in acid soils: evaluation using different methods

In the present work, different methods were tested to evaluate the adsorption and desorption of metalaxyl in two acid soils with different organic carbon and clay contents. The three methods (batch, stirred flow chamber and column) that were examined produced similar findings when the two soils were compared: (a) the metalaxyl adsorption capacity was higher in the soil with higher organic matte...
